Sugar Tree Valley is a privately owned 160 acre wildlife refuge and horse farm located just three minutes from Eddy Creek Marina on Lake Barkley in Lyon County, Kentucky.

Our enjoyment of wildlife has caused us to focus on a wide variety of activities that we hope will enhance our little corner of the world for all critters who call this valley home…regardless of how long they stay.

Our list of wildlife enhancement projects is constantly changing.   Several avian nesting structures are located over a large area,  including an 11 box bluebird trail.  Over the past two years we’ve managed to protect and enhance one large common milkweed area, along with several smaller patches that are very popular with a wide assortment of birds, bees, and butterflies.  The timing of the mowing of our fields is done in an effort to provide adequate cover, food, wildflower habitat, and  thicker cover for critters in need of such a home.

Those are just a few of our day-to-day, season-to-season efforts.  We also do some other very basic things that help keep the wildlife smiling.  Things like year-round bird feeding, limited herbicide use, the planting of native wildflowers in our yard and flower garden, and leaving those dead trees standing in our woods are examples of some of the more common things we do.

Our cozy cabin is available for guests who are looking for a quiet place to relax after a long day on the lake, or for those who would like to explore our hiking trails and perhaps glimpse a variety of wildlife that could include deer, wild turkey, and native birds.  We would also enjoy accompanying guests on walks and sharing some of the knowledge gained from living here for several years.

The location and relative seclusion may also offer a good place  for one to enjoy photography, writing, painting, or simple peace and quiet.

Guests can also choose to just sit on the front porch and soak up the fresh air, sit around a cozy campfire, or take a nap. Regardless, we feel that a stay with us will be very enjoyable and relaxing.
